This page explains what the rule means for Ontario farmers planning barn construction, livestock expansion, manure storage, or nutrient application.
What Is O. Reg. 267/03?
Ontario Regulation 267/03 is the regulation under the Nutrient Management Act, 2002. It sets out the rules for how nutrients — primarily from livestock manure and non-agricultural source materials — are managed on Ontario farms.
When Does It Apply?
When building or expanding livestock barns
When increasing nutrient storage capacity
When farm operations exceed certain nutrient unit thresholds
When applying non-agricultural source materials (NASM) to land
When making changes that increase nutrient generation
What Farmers Must Do
Depending on your situation, you may need to:
Prepare a Nutrient Management Strategy (NMS) for barn builds and expansions
Prepare a Nutrient Management Plan (NMP) for land application (300+ NU)
Prepare a NASM Plan for non-agricultural source materials
Submit plans to OMAFRA for approval before proceeding
