When Is an NMS Required?
A Nutrient Management Strategy (NMS) is required under Ontario Regulation 267/03 when you're making changes to your farm that affect how nutrients are generated or stored. The NMS focuses on livestock housing, manure storage, and farm infrastructure.
You Likely Need an NMS If:
You're building a new livestock barn
You're expanding an existing barn or livestock operation
You're constructing new or expanded manure storage
Your operation generates 5 or more nutrient units
You're making changes that increase nutrient generation on your property
You Probably Don't Need an NMS If:
You're not building or expanding any livestock facilities
Your operation is not changing in size
You're only growing crops without livestock
If you're unsure, we can confirm quickly. A short phone call is usually all it takes to determine whether you need an NMS, an NMP, or both.
